I am offering a early to mid-1900’s brass Patent Log. These mechanical devices were mounted on the boat’s taffrail (stern) connected by a towline to a rotor, which is drug in the water. The register records the rotor’s revolutions and converts them into nautical miles. This “Excelsior” IV Log was built by Thomas Walker & Son Ltd., Birmingham, England. The unit includes the Register, Outrigger Mount, Rotor, Sinker, Oil Dispenser (50% full), approximately 40 feet of braided Towline, plus both port and starboard Shoe Plates. The brass Register measures 4” x 6” with a 2¼” porcelain Face signed as follows: “Walker’s Excelsior IV Log” “Made in England by Thos. Walker & Son Ltd. Birmingham”. It has two nautical mile dials (0>10) (0<100) and still has the 6’ hemp Safety Line attached. The 11” brass Rotor is signed on each fin as follows: “(Walker Trade Mark)” “EXCELSIOR” “267”, and on one fin “T. WALKER & SON LTD. BIRIMINGHAM, ENGLAND”. All the components are housed in the original dovetail pine case (plywood top & bottom) measuring 15” x 7¼” x 5½”, with all brass hardware and the original Builder’s Operating Instructions affixed to the inside of the case’s hinged lid. Also Included are a “Time and Knot Table”, “Table of Nautical and Statute Miles”, and “Length of Line Graph”. The only obvious flaw is that the glass register window has several cracks, but is still solid. This 11½ pound nautical artifact is a fine example of quality British craftsmanship.
