I am offering an original (not a reproduction) mid-1900’s English H. Hughes & Son HUSUN Sextant and Case. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship’s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. This popular three-ring unit has -5º to 130º brass/silver scale stamped as follows:”35257” “MADE IN ENGLAND” “H.HUGHES & SON Ltd. London.”. The unit is housed in its original 11” x 10¼” x 5½” solid mahogany dovetail case and includes a lock with key. The manufacturer’s brass tag is mounted on the 6” radius arm which reads “HUSUN” “TRADE MARK”. The accessories include two scopes and a sighting tube with each having its own draw tube. Also included are a sun filter, mirror adjusting tool, oil bottle (one half full), and a separate scope mount. An original Liverpool Chandler’s label and Hughes “IMPORTANT” Instructions are still attached to the inside of the case. The oil stained Hughes Calibration Certificate has the identical sextant serial number and was signed on “1/6/42”. I am also including a Duty Receipt and Repair Bill from two prior owners. The only significant issue I see is that the reading light fixture and wire are missing. Otherwise, the overall condition is good, but it does show the wear and exposure to the elements caused by years of sea duty. This nautical artifact is the perfect example of British maritime history.
