I am offering a Refurbished Lifeboat Binnacle with a Lietz 4 Inch Gimbaled Compass. The binnacle is constructed of copper and brass measuring 8½”W x 8½”D x 10”T with a 5¾" x 4” beveled glass window. There is no manufacturer’s tag attached, therefore, based on the design, quality, and materials used it was likely built in the later 1900s in Taiwan. The copper case has the typical dents and scrapes which indicates a lot of sea duty. The base and chimney cover have been replaced, plus it appears that it had an oil font burner, which has been replaced with 110v electric lighting. A brass Lietz USN compass is currently is mounted in the case. The compass glass retaining ring is stamped as follows: “LIETZ 19578" "U.S. NAVY BU. SHIPS" "4" BOAT COMPASS" "MARK I (circled N) 2559 – 1940”. Based on this information the compass was obviously added at a later time. It appears to function and point in the right direction even though there is no fluid inside. This twelve pound nautical item is in fair overall condition, but still displays reasonably well.
