Job Description Athletic Coach Job Description Mission Statement The San Marcos Unified School District is an innovative and collaborative community providing an unparalleled educational experience. Position Goal The goal of this position is under the supervision of a site administrator, as coordinated by the Head Coach, assume the responsibility for coaching/training student athletes in the designated sport. Performance Responsibilities This job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this position, but it is intended to accurately reflect the primary elements. Duties may vary amongst various job locations. Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential job functions listed below. *Denotes an essential job function. Organizes and Coordinates all phases of a sports program. * Assist in teaching athletes to perform sound, safe, fundamental techniques of a designated sport.* Comply with the San Marcos Unified School District’s Coaches Handbook, “Code of Ethical Conduct,” and all applicable California Interscholastic Federal (CIF) rules and regulations.* Plans, organizes, and coordinates sports activities and training workouts, and coaches individuals concerning specific physical performance activities and procedures.* Instructs and demonstrates the principles, methods, and techniques of regulating the movement of body, hands, and feet to achieve maximum proficiency in the related sport activity. Observes sport participants during practice and workout sessions to detect and correct errors in activity procedures and methods.* Instructs, explains, and enforces health and safety rules and regulations and that all student athletes have proper clearance (medical examination/medical coverage), prior to participating in practices. * Develop and implement physical conditioning programs that allow athletes to achieve maximum performance.* Work with Athletic Trainers (as applicable) to review, audit, and monitor sport activity related injuries and determine the most appropriate time for an athlete to return to active sport participation.* Select or assist in the selection of interscholastic sport activity uniforms and related sport apparatus and equipment. Provide a variety of interscholastic sport activities, which requires the coordination of travel and equipment transporting for out-the-area games and activities.* Confer with, counsel, and advise site administrators concerning interscholastic sports programs and activities.* Supervise athletes during practices and games and monitor girl’s and/or boy’s locker room/changing areas. Adhere to California Interscholastic Federal (CIF) regulations (as applicable) to the sport and athletic program as a whole. Adhere to the rules of the sport and CIF rules (as applicable), regulations, and policies and penalties for violation of these rules. Respect and support the officials at all times. Make the welfare of the students his/her main consideration. Model good sportsmanship for the athletes, parents, competitors, and the fans. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: proper certification as mandated by California State Law, which includes First Aid, CPR, injury prevention, drug awareness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion Certification and Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training planning, organization, and directing the designated sport the training program required for the designated sport the rules of the designated sport CIF regulations (as applicable) for the sport and athletic program District policies, regulations, and operations high school rules, procedures, and practices correct English usage in both written and verbal form Ability to: demonstrate strong scheduling and organizational skills communicate effectively with students and parents, orally and in writing diffuse difficult situations and counsel student athletes use tact, patience, and courtesy effectively supervise student athletes apply and explain school rules, regulations, policies and procedures Education and Experience Competitive experience in the sport is desirable. Previous coaching experience is desirable. Previous work with adolescent age students is desirable. License(s), Certification(s), and other Requirements Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance Current First Aid, CPR certification required. Sudden Cardiac Arrest Certificate, Concussion Certificate, and Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training Certificate required.
