Are you self-conscious about your appearance? Guys -- do you hate having your shirt off? Girls -- do you hate having your bare midriff on display or dislike wearing shorts as short as shorts are today?

We are forming a new self-help group in Mira Mesa to help those of us with body image issues to gradually face our fears in a graduated envoronment around other individuals who feel exactly the same way you do. This is a nonjudgmental group and that is key to our success.

The group consists of 12 individuals: six women and six men. Openings only become available when a member "graduates" or otherwise decides not to continue participating. It is a democratic group who will agree to accept each new member and who will suggest to current members when you have graduated; that is, when you appear to be entirely comfortable in your own skin.

We don't call them workshops. It's difficult to refer to our meetings as sessions. We start with a social hour in a club environment where you can enjoy drinks and snacks and meet other group members as they arrive and circulate. Sometimes we mix things up and ask for all group participants to remove a top layer: guys, shirts off. Ladies, down to bra, bikini top or similar garment. Sometimes, then, the social hour consists of a room of individuals enjoying beverages and snacks while remaining shirtless. Or we may not do that.

Always remember that you are surrounded by supportive, caring individuals who are as insecure about their bodies as you are about yours.

After social hour the group will move into a more formal, yet relaxed, setting where we get to know each other and our individuals goals. Members of the group may be asked to provide feedback on the individual's choice of levels.

Level S is supportive and caring. You may need feedback on an exercise or diet program and it is positive energy that encourages you to stay on task. The group will support you efforts and acknowledge your progress. Level I is information. If you choose Level 1 group members are encouraged to help gently point out areas where physical improvement may enhance the quality of your life, based on your own situation and needs.

Level T is for truth. Individuals who desire critically honest appraisals of their bodies and who know they have weaknesses to face may choose this option. The goal is to take an honest look at yourself and evaluate how to improve those areas needing improvement and how to learn to live with those areas than cannot be changed.

Yes, you will likely be uncomfortable at first and if you are not uncomfortable in such a setting then this group is not the right one for you. You should feel uncomfortable at first and when you reach the point you are no longer uncomfortable in front of the group that means it is time to resign and let a new member take your place. And you will absolutely become desenstized following this approach and before long fearful memories of being terrified going shirtless or wearing short shorts will be history.

We hold our meetings at large, very private facility in Sorrento Valley. Meetings last two hours and always begin with a social hour with drinks and snacks provided; feel free to bring your own vices for recreational relaxation should you need to do so.

First meeting rules:

• 1. Be on time. Doors lock at the start time.

• 2. Wear street clothes.

• 3. Under the street clothes wear a pair of shorts that are so short or so low rise that they make you uncomfortable. Guys, if you don't have something like those boxers may be ok, or check ebay by searching "sexy low rise" in the swimwear section. You will find some compact shorts at low prices. Girls, just think short, particularly if the length makes you feel uncomfortably exposed. Remember the group will support you, not criticize you. And there is no requirement anyone will ever see you wearing these shorts: FEEL THEM!

• 4. Under the short shorts wear a garment so insanely small and sexy that you would never dream of wearing such a garment in public (and you won't). Guys, this includes you and can refer to anything from a jock strap to a posing cup. Push the envelope. FEEL the tiny garment you have touching your skin. Sense the gossamer blanket holding you just south of complete nudity. No one will see you. But feel the secret you share with everyone else in the room.

• 5. You will never, ever be asked to undress to any state of dress where you are uncomfortable. Should you choose to do so it will be you who chooses to do so. We might encourage you along the way but without pressure.

• 6. Be self-conscious at any state of undress short of being fully clothed. If you feel whole when you are fully dressed but no so much so when you are nearly fully exposed then this group is for you.

The goal of the group is to help motivate those who wish to pursue physical improvements to their bodies, to help those who have physical attributes which cannot be changed to learn to accept what they have been given, and to help those who simply need to learn to accept their bodies as they are to accept their bodies the way they are. It's a very simple goal.

If you think you're too skinny we welcome you. If you think you're getting a bit pudgy we welcome you. If you see yourself as fat we welcome you. If you see a glaringly negative physical attribute in yourself you are welcome to our group and we will embrace you as you are.

We're having two first meetings of this new group. The first first meeting is Friday evening, February 20 at an industrial location in Mira Mesa. You have a choice of meeting times: 630 pm today or 130 pm on Monday. Group sizes are limited to 12 so we will accept only 18 reservations per meeting time and those are equally balanced by gender. There are no fees. This is not a money making venture; it is a self help group.

If you would like to attend this self-help group please reply to this posting and include your age and gender IN THE SUBJECT LINE. We will respond either that you have been accepted or if you have been placed on the waiting list.

We will not sell or otherwise disclose your email address and no real names are required to participate in this self-help group. The group is what we make it. The successes are real.

Friday, February 20.Sorrento Valley. RSVP for 630pm. Or Monday, February 23 for 130 pm. No real names required. Ever.

Get ready for a life changing experience.
