Laboratory/Department: Office of Technology Development
Promotes and facilitates the transfer of technologies to the commercial sector so that the public can directly benefit from the creativity of our researchers.
Position Description:
Manages, develops strategic vision for, and actively participates in the operations of the Office of Technology and Development (OTD). Responsible for department that handles all technology:related agreements on behalf of Institute. Maintains close relationships with faculty and research personnel to facilitate identification of marketable technologies developed in Institute laboratories. Communicates and partners with faculty to facilitate the technology transfer process. Oversees patenting, marketing, valuation, licensing, and administration of technology licenses. Monitors licensee performance, and initiates and monitors enforcement matters as needed. Together with Senior Director, Business Development, solicits commercial sponsored research funds and manages external alliances and strategic partnerships. Works with faculty and Senior Director, Business Development to establish sponsored research and collaborative research plans to insure advancement and protection of Institute intellectual property. Assists faculty in participating in start:up companies based on discoveries in their laboratories by providing advice and contacts for organizing, financing and managing start:up endeavors. Interfaces with other Salk departments and with senior management and the Board of Trustees on technology transfer matters. As member of senior administrative management, participates in decision:making and initiatives outside of departmental functions. Establishes contacts and maintains relationships with industry organizations, local and national biotechnology communities and pharmaceutical companies. Handles IP:related compliance and reporting functions.
:Masters degree in a life science.
:Ph.D. in a life science.
:Additional degree in business or law
:Patent Agent registration, and/or CLP or RPPT certification
:Minimum of twelve (12) years of progressively responsible technology transfer, technology contracting, intellectual property management and/or business development experience in a supervisory, managerial or executive capacity
:Minimum of four (4) years directing and managing patent prosecution
:Substantial experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts
:Management and business experience in areas related to technology transfer
:Understanding of an academic research setting
:Experience in a life science research environment
:Familiar with applicable government regulations and sponsorship requirements and obligations
:Previous personnel management experience
:Previous functional or project management experience
:Experience drafting and negotiating technology:based agreements including out:licensing transactions
:Successful track record of working with a variety of stake holders (internal and external) to resolve complex issues and create unique solutions
:Knowledgeable about and conversant in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics
:Experience using iEdison
:Experience using Sophia Database developed by Wellspring
Special Requirements:
:Must be willing to work in an animal:related research environment.
:Must sign a confidentiality agreement. Regularly handles confidential information including proprietary technical and commercial information that has commercial value and conflict of interest potential.
:Work location is located within close proximity to the Salk Institute, but not on the main campus.
:Successful completion of the Institutes background investigation.
