Learn to be a Pack Leader
Learn how to gain his respect, loyalty and love. It’s important for the new puppy to realize that you are the new provider of all that is good in his life: food, shelter, companionship and fun. In his world that makes you the pack leader.

Come (or Recall)
You’ve seen those people with dogs who completely ignore them when called. It’s frustrating and dangerous. This is the most critical behavior to teach him. It could save his life. And it will definitely make your life, and his, much less stressful.

Socialization
This is one of the most important parts of training your new pup. To “Socialize” simply means to familiarize your pup with all things new and different: cars, trucks, other animals and people, different environments, different walking surfaces, and to relieve himself on different surfaces. A “socialized” pup will grow into a confident, happy dog. Failure to socialize him can cause him to become fearful, anti-social and even aggressive.

Leash Training
Teach your puppy to walk on a leash without pulling. No one likes to be pulled along by a dog doing his own thing. Teach him this behavior early to prepare for a lifetime of enjoyable walking experiences.

Sit, Stand and Down
A dog that learns to obey these cues will be safer, happier and calmer, allowing you to maintain control in all types of situations and environments. The cues, “Sit” and “Down” are used often. The “Stand” cue makes life easier for grooming, vet exams and other circumstances.

Stay and Wait
These two cues are used in different situation:

“Stay” means to remain in position until released.
“Wait” means to pause, usually while you are doing something, like going through a door. You tell him to “Wait” while you go through the door and then ask him to join you. Or ask him to wait when you open a car door so you can be sure it’s safe before letting him out. You will use this command a lot.

Leave it
This cue means “Do not touch it, smell it, lick it, pick it up or pay attention to it in any way.” Use it to teach him to ignore nasty stuff he finds when you are walking him, or to prevent him from grabbing food off the counter or that has accidentally dropped on the floor.

Gently
Teach your dog to be courteous and take food “gently” from your hand. No nipped fingers and hands.

Greeting Guests with Manners
Teach him to wait until he is invited to greet guests and to greet them politely. Prevent jumping and scratching, causing your guests possible injury or clothing damage - and saving you the embarrassment of an out-of-control dog.
