When the nut cracks the magic begins with dancing mice, snowflake-throwing ballerinas, percolating coffee, and a garden of lollipops and other sweets. As most ballet companies and dance studios rehearse their soldiers and sugarplums for the annual productions of the Tchaikovsky holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, Betzi Roe and her Coronado School Dance Company at Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) are creating a new take on the story. The Cracked Nut offers an innovative, zany, and artful twist on the traditional production. Performances take place December 11th and 12th at 7:00 p.m. and December 13th at 2:00 pm at the state-of-the-art Coronado High Performing Arts Center, 650 D Avenue Coronado.

The nut opens to reveal a kingdom of sweets alive on stage. These tasty dance treats include hip- hopping Cuban coffee, techno fortune cookies, Chai Tea à la Bollywood, and candy canes grooving to Annie Lennox. The diverse music suits each theme. CoSA dance students choreographed many of the segments, and dance styles alternate between ballet, jazz, hip hop, folk inspired forms, and modern dance.

CoSA dance productions always engage and entertain. Previous productions of Go Ask Alice (Roe’s take on Alice in Wonderland) and Appalachian Spring (all new choreography by Roe), a collaboration with members of the San Diego Symphony have shown that something powerful is going on in the CoSA dance department. The Cracked Nut will be no exception.

9th Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival
Sunday, November 1, 2009, 10am to 4pm

Mission San Luis Rey invites you to join the fun on Sunday, November 1, 2009 to celebrate Dia de los Meurtos in Oceanside, the largest festival of its kind in San Diego County. The Mission will fulfill the need for a new venue area for this year’s festival. With a flower-filled retail mercado using over 30,000 marigolds that are grown especially for the celebration by Mellano & Company. Marigolds are used to create Ofrendas, altars honoring loved ones, at the heart of the festival. These authentic Ofrendas will be created by artists, students, Oaxacan and Michoacan families as memorials.
Guest will enjoy music, dancing, a variety of scrumptious food, a retail mercado, and a parade authentic for this event. Oceanside’s Dia de los Muertos is an interactive festival where patrons of all ages are invited to create their very own ofrendas at the Chalk Cemetery with candles, flowers, and chalk. This heartwarming area stretches an entire block by the end of the day.

So here is what I have created so far.... 3 very UNIQUE and very RARE paintings! These are very special in the sense, that they were inspired from a "Higher Intellegence. " These 3 are my first in the series of paintings to come... I truly believe these will become "Collectables or Collector's" items in the near future very soon. No one has ever done these works of Art!

The first painting (Acrylic and various other mediums) is entitled "LOVE" for only: $800.00
It is a mixture of the above formulations plus more... It has embedded in the Lotus flower 3 crystals: Quartz Crystal ~ Rhodochrosite ~ Carnelian. It has silver glitter in the heart and gold glitter on the Lotus flower. It is made of healing shades of Red: for "Empowerment", Purple: for "Knowledge, Spirit & Wisdom" and Green; for "Healing & Love!"

"QUARTZ CRYSTAL" The All singing, all dancing crystal. Good for the soul, powerful dispels negativity in your own energy field and in the environs. Receives, activates, contains, amplifies and transmits energy, a good thought provoker and a friend to meditation inspiring communication with the higher self. Used as a tool for therapy it is an excellent channeler of healing. Mother of all stones.

"RHODOCHROSITE" Encourages feelings of love and compassion, enhances the creative process and promotes intuition. Rhodocrosite is thought to aid circulation and the blood pressure. (It is made to appear to be a broken heart with the words). Above the heart reads: "Is there anybody out there who will Love - Respect - & Cherish Me?" Dave Dresden Biography

The Early Years:
Dresden's zeal for dance music and culture developed early in high school where he frequented local Connecticut dance clubs and befriended the Café's DJ Moby, a local DJ hero at the time. His early experiences at the Café fueled his passion to immerse himself in the culture that would one day become his career and lifelong obsession. From there, he purchased a pair of pitch-controlled CD players and got to work. Dresden quickly cultivated a following due to his simple but effective music policy: play the right track at the right time and only play great songs.

Journalist:
His ambitions did not stop with spinning. While he continued to play in the clubs (sometimes five nights a week) he became a dance music journalist by day. Dresden was named a reporter to the Billboard dance chart, and he began writing reviews and features for national magazines such as DMA, DJ Times and Mixer. Dresden profiled Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Mastersat Work, Todd Terry, Sasha & Digweed, Puff Daddy, BT, CrystalMethod, Keoki, Josh Wink, Chemical Brothers and Deep Dish. Many of these artists' first American press came through Dresden's journalistic efforts.

A&R:
His affiliation with respected publications gave him easier access to obscure and unreleased tunes upfront, and therefore gave him an edge against the competition. Dresden regularly contributes his A&R skills to Promo Only CDs and its "Mainstream Club" and "Alternative Club" series. In addition, he scouts new music for Pete Tong's highly influential Essential Selection radio show on the BBC Radio 1. Through his efforts there, Dresden has hipped Pete to some rather large records, three of which have become "Essential New Tunes" according to Tong's method of gauging a guaranteed hit.

Dresden's wide knowledge of dance music led to the opportunity to help select songs for Nettwerk Records popular Plastic compilation series. Dresden has also had a hand in producing compilation CDs and single releases with other independent labels such as Strictly Hype, 4 Play and Max Music. In addition, he's accredited by his own releases for Strictly Hype's trance offshoot Sunrise; Trancendence: The First Wave, and the hit-packed Transit.

Radio:
His radio career began with the long-running, highly rated "Electro Circus," which aired on Hartford, Connecticut's modern rock station WMRQ from 1997 until 2000. Dresden's radio career continued as music director and on-air personality for GrooveRadio, an internet radio station during the year 2000.

Producer:
Dresden now applies his talent and knowledge of the music in the studio, collaborating with various producers on remixes. Currently Dave has been busy remixing tracks with San Francisco producer Josh Gabriel under the name Gabriel & Dresden. To date, the two have remixed tracks for Way Out West, 4 Strings, Dj Tiesto, Rodger Goode, New Order, Beber & Tamara and Paul Oakenfold.


Anthony Pappa Biography
Growing up in Melbourne, the Pappa household was a household full of music. Anthony’s Dad played in a band and band practice was at casa Pappa. “I was always thinking music,” Anthony remembers, of this outpost of Italy within the new world of Australia, “because as a family the house was always full of music.”

From the age of three or four Anthony was picking up sticks and joining the band on the drums, leading to a 12-year education in the instrument, the ability to read and write music and a lifelong love of tight percussion and syncopation. “I was supposed to become a top drummer, that’s what my dad wanted me to do,” Anthony recalls. Instead, he ran away and joined the disco.

At the age of 13, Anthony first accessed dance music via the radio: recording shows,then tracking down the music. At the same time, he taught himself to mix, and because of his technical background, was able to do that before he even had decks, using a metronome to beat match. The loss of another Ringo Starr was clubland’s gain. At 15, Anthony had already secured a residency at the 4000-capacity Metro (“my dad used to drive me to the venue, drop me off and then come back four or five hours later to pick me up because I was underage!”). That same year, only two years after teaching himself to mix, he was Australia’s DMC Champion. By 15, Anthony already possessed the technical skills that would later bring him to the attention of fellow DJs and punters alike, as he evolved into “the DJ’s DJ.”

Still Anthony was thinking ahead. “I was ordering my music from London. It cost me a fortune. I would ring all these record shops and get a DHL package with two or three days delivery, to be as upfront as possible and be ahead of the other guys in Australia.” Such blue-sky thinking became the literal blue skies that that took Pappa to the UK. On advice from a friend he entered a competition to win a set at Ministry of Sound, promptly won, and in 1994 packed up his record box for his first trip away from Australia, playing Ministry and Up Yer Ronson in Leeds: “I was just blown away... seeing the club scene over here in 94, I thought the place was amazing. Within six months I’d packed my bags and come back.”

In the mid-90s the “sound du jour” was progressive house and Anthony was very much caught up in that moment, taking his place on DJ Magazine’s infamous “Nu-Breed” cover with Lee Burridge, Craig Richards and Steve Lawler. Back then, clubland was fractured but thankfully these days people are less eager to stick labels on everything. “All DJs are playing all different kinds of music now,” says Anthony. “Any DJ who plays one style of music, whatever it is, is going to be boring because it doesn’t go anywhere. It’s the range in your style and set that makes it interesting. It’s not about playing techno or house… it’s about playing good music.”

Anthony’s music was always more elegant and experimental, and that quickly brought him to the attention of clubs and labels alike. He mixed the very first Nu-Breed CD for Global Underground, several well-received Renaissance albums (two of which passed 100,000 sales) and as part of Freefall hit the top 10 across Europe, taking his rightful place in the haloed booth alongside the UK’s DJ aristocracy. “I saw posters of myself and I nearly crashed my car,” he says, smiling at the memory.

Anthony has played the biggest clubs on the planet and mixed the scene’s biggest selling albums. But fueled by endless energy for the music and a desire to play it for people, there is much, much more to come.

The hardest working man on the circuit spends much of his time at the coalface of club culture, actually doing the job of the DJ, working the territories that love him, from Eastern Europe to South America. “I’ve always been known amongst the other DJs as the hard working guy who tries to do it all,”Anthony details. “Maybe it‘s because I’ve come from Australia and I’ve got that drive, to try and make it work for me over here.”

Now based in the UK, Anthony recently set up a label, Red Light District, on which he has released a single, Outback, as well as his Album Moments, and Moments II. These deep, urbane albums show progression without necessarily being progressive and true to form, proving to be truly forward-thinking. “People say ‘progressive’ is a bad word,” says Anthony, “but that’s exactly what it is. At the end of the day… it’s all progressive.” Thankfully there are innovators like Pappa prepared to think that way, otherwise we’d all still be wearing flares and spinning Night Fever.

Anthony’s career has been as smooth as one of his mixes, and like his sets, continues to build and evolve. But after the gigs, the productions, the tours and the compilations, Anthony Pappa remains modest and circumspect about any highlights: “It’s all a highlight for me,” he admits. “The main highlight is that I’m living my dream, and I’m doing it.”
